Video on Solving Last 2 Centers of 6x6 Cube

I have created a video below that shows how to solve the last 2 centers of the 6x6 cube.
I have later found that it is also the same for the last 2 centers of the 7x7 cube.

There is only 1 case when solving the last 2 centers of the 6x6 and the 7x7.
And that is, where there is only 1 yellow left.

The five steps:

1. Orient the last yellow and the last orange so that they are as close to each other as possible.

2. Swap the middle two slices.

3. Create a yellow 'T'

4. Remove the vertical bar of the T.

5. Attach the last yellow strip

There is also the case of the mirror image.
Just apply the five steps in reverse.

For the 7x7 there is a slight modification.
The middle slice is immovable. When applying Step 2,
just swap the slices to the left and to the right of the middle slice.

That’s it!

7x7 Solving the 5th and 6th centers

Below are the sequence to solve the last 2 centers, ie. yellow and orange.

Orient the single yellow and yellow strip opposing each other.
The single yellow on top center and the yellow strip below:

Rotate the single yellow up:

Turn the top 2U, so that the single yellow is now at bottom of top face:

Return the middle slice down, and the single yellow will click into place, and attaches
to the yellow strip:

7x7 last 2 pentadges

Note below screenshot. Two last pentadges
Do the Lion algorithm.
Assume the centre red as 1 edge - so there are 3 edges (as in 5x5).

You should get this:

Then do LuLu Algorithm. Assume the centre as 1 single edge.
And you should get the 3 centre edges correctly flipped.
You then assume the 3 centre edges as 1 single piece.

Then do the Lulu Algorithm again and you should get this:

Repeat the steps for the opposite pentadges at the back.

7x7 solved in 1 hour 6 mins - new personal record

Improved from 2 hours 24 mins to 1 hour 6 mins - a big improvement!

How to solve 7x7

My first solve for the 7x7 :

Hope to improve on the time in future.

I wasted a lot of time doing the 5th and 6th centres.

The last 2 pentadges were not as difficult as I expected.
Just apply the Lion algorithm repeatedly.

Edge/Flip Swap: (Lion Algorithm)
(Ll)’ U2 (Ll)’ U2 F2 (Ll)’ F2 (Rr) U2 (Rr)’ U2 (Ll)2

Each time, treating the middle 3 as 1 edge, or, middle 5 as 1 edge depending on
the situation.
Once u get the pentadges all of one color, just apply Lulu's algorithm if the middle is flipped.

Single Edge Flip: (Lulu's Algorithm)
(Rr)2 B2 U2 (Ll) U2 (Rr)’ U2 (Rr) U2 F2 (Rr) F2 (Ll)’ B2 (Rr)2

Step 3 has no parity - it behaves just like a 5x5 cube.

How to do the last 2 quadrages in a 6x6 cube

Below is the left view of the last two quadrages:

And the right view:

We need to swap the right middle green to the left.
And we need to swap the left middle orange to the right.

Make sure the white centre is facing you and do this algorithm :

D* R F' U R' F D'*

D* means rotate the lower 3 layers together.
D'* also means rotate the lower 3 layers together (but opposite direction).

You should get this:

Now you can treat the middle two orange edges as 1 single edge.
So you now have a tredge and you can now solve the tredge using the usual 5x5 algorithm.
The same holds true for the green edges on the left - which is also treated as a single green edge.

How to solve 6x6x6 Cube

First get a Free Cube Simulator for Big Cubes:
www.gabbasoft.com

Then watch :
Thrawst's youtube 6x6x6 solve

Solved
Step 1:
I did the six 4x4 centers first. Build 1x3 strips and insert into centres.
Works pretty much like the 5x5 centres techniques.

Step 2:
Then, I did the quadrages. I paired all quadrages.
For the last two quadrages, if you get the centre 2 edges flipped, use the 4x4 algorithm to correct them:

Last 2 edges:
Last 2 dedges both vertically parallel to each other.
D* R F' U R' F D'*

Then, treat the centre 2 edges as 1 single edge - then you can apply all the 5x5 algorithms to solve the last 2 quadrages.

Step 3:
Solve as normal 3x3 cube.
I encountered 2 parities.
The first parity is a single edge flip parity. I used the 4x4 algorithm:

Parity 2 (1 flipped edge)
With edge in front:
2R*
2B
2U
L*
2U
R'*
2U
R*
2U
2F
R*
2F
L'*
2B
2R*

The second parity is a 2 edge swap parity. I also used the 4x4 algorithm:

Parity 3 (Opposite edges - but no flip) &
Parity 5 (Front and Right Edge - no flipped)

With one edge in front:
2r 2U 2r 2U* 2r 2u

Not as difficult as I expected.

Sune and Anti-Sune

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qGg1TGZgJY

How to decide to do Sune or Anti-Sune?

Orient the fish to face bottom left.
If the bottom right facing you is yellow - do Sune
If the bottom right yellow is facing right - do Anti-Sune

Sune - fish head facing bottom left
R U R' U R U' U' R'

Anti-Sune - fishhead facing top left

R' U' R U' R' 2U' R

Note that Anti-Sune is just the opposite. You just need to remember one Algorithm.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDyfEjYSVXw&feature=related

To solve last 2 edges:

http://www.bigcubes.com/5x5x5/lastedges.html

From the above you will note:

There are 10 cases and 10 algorithms.
However, I think we need to remember only 2 algorithms:

Single Edge Flip:
(Rr)2 B2 U2 (Ll) U2 (Rr)’ U2 (Rr) U2 F2 (Rr) F2 (Ll)’ B2 (Rr)2

Edge/Flip Swap:
(Ll)’ U2 (Ll)’ U2 F2 (Ll)’ F2 (Rr) U2 (Rr)’ U2 (Ll)2

All the other cases can be converted to the above 2 cases:
1.
By inverting one of the the tredges and/or
2.
Applying either the first and/or the second algorithms a few times in different combinations

How to Lube Eastsheen:

Note that Rubik and Eastsheen has different Lubing Techniques.
On Rubik, it is same as 3 x 3 x 3, you twist 45 degrees and pop an edge.
But, never do that for Eastsheen, it will lock some pieces later when u put the edge back on.
Instead, for Eastsheen, you remove 4 center caps.

See this AOL - youtube

An alternative, or, probably better (for both Eastsheen and Rubik), is to use the straw and attach it to the Silicon Spray can. Misalign the cube and insert the straw into the gaps betwen
the misaligned layers and spray. For Eastsheen, there is a hollow spot in every middle layer. You can see it after misaligning.

OLL and PLL - why bother? Petrus and Fridrich Hybrid is better.

OLL and PLL by Bob Burton

OLL and PLL youtube by Pestvic

I find it ridiculous to memorize so many algorithms solely for the purpose of decreasing the time it take to solve the cube - it's a no-brainer. Rubik Cube competitions won by memorizing tons of algorithms is a test of memory - not a test of skill and intelligence. What's the fun in that?

57 algorithms for OLL and 21 algorithms for PLL - a total of 78 algorithms - just to speedsolve the last layer (LL) is ridiculous.

To me, the joy of solving a cube lies in its intuitive methods - eg Petrus Method.
Use your brains and think... that's where the fun is.

I have greater respect for those who solve cubes by thinking rather than by memorizing steps.

But I realize that the LL cannot be solved intuitively - so I still have no choice but to memorize algorithms and in this respect, I would prefer to memorize as few algorithms as possible. And as such, Dan Brown (pogobat) method is the way to go - only 4 algorithms for the last layer. Another LL which I recently fell in love with is Petrus' LL, which has only 3 algorithms, i.e. Niklas, Sune and Alan (in that order).

Even the Fridrich LL is way too many algorithms for me to memorize.

So, my technique is:

either:

(1) Fridrich F2L - no algorithms
Dan Brown's 4 LL only 4 algorithms to remember, or Petrus LL, only 3 algorithms
Note that, if using Petrus LL, if no cross on LL, may need to do this first:

F R U Ri Ui Fi

[ FRU Rigid Unzipped Floppies ]

Combining Fridrich F2L with Petrus LL is what I call Fridrich + Petrus LL (Fridrich Hybrid).

(2) Petrus F2L - no algorithms
For LL, only 3 algorithms to remember

So to solve the Rubik Cube, I only need to memorize 3 algorithms (Petrus) or 4 algorithms (Fridrich)!

How to Sand Rubik Cube - Warning - Don't Do It!

I tried all the below methods of sanding and I lost a cube!
So, my advice - don't do it! I also did the silly thing of using WD40 on one cube and I lost that cube too. It become stuck and worse than before using the WD40 on it.

Only use Silicon Spray - nothing else. I use CRC Brand Silicon Spray - ensure that when buying a silicon spray - read the fine print on the can to check whether it is suitable for plastic. The CRC Silicon brand that I use specifically mentions plastic. Some silicon spray excludes plastic - so be careful.

F2L Keyhole Method

Will try this next:

F2L Trick - fewer moves

Petrus Method

first video Petrus method

second video Petrus method

The method so far:

STEP 1:

2 x 2 x 2
~~~~~~~
(bottom left, orange facing me, white facing left, top white facing up with white blue edge on right)
Li Li Bi
Twist top to match 2 x 2 edge with sides
To solve orange-blue edge:
(white 2 x 2 facing up on top left, orange facing you, blue facing left)
put orange blue edge on bottom with orange facing me and blue facing down,
protect ...
U
Twist orange-blue into place:
F
Put back:
Ui
STEP 2:
(2 x 2 x 2 bottom left corner, orange facing me, white facing left, blue facing down)
To solve top left corner, White-Green-Orange:
R-U many times until green faces up then twist to top left corner.
To solve the orange-green:
put ornage-green edge on top layer, then protect white-green-orange:
L
Twist green-orange to front, then put the white-green-orange back:
Li
To solve top left green-white:
Protect 2 pieces (white-green-orange corner & green-orange edge) first by turning them away:
Ui Ri
...
Then put them back:
R U
STEP 3:
video 3a Petrus Method
You are now 2 x 2 x 3 with green facing left blue facing right, white facing back and
orange facing down.
yellow centre facing u and red centre facing up.
facing u align red edge on left
facing up align yellow edge on back
then do:
Li Ui L
and keep repeating until all bad edges fixed. You will know when they are fixed when
u are able to get a yellow cross on top and a red cross in front. Note that u will need to twist
the top and front until eventually u can get the crosses.
STEP 4a:
video 3b Petrus Method
The above vid is actually step 4a, step 3a and 3b has been combined in video 3a.
At the end of this stage
You would have F2L solved except for the bottom right corner+edge :
yellow-orange-blue (yellow facing u, blue facing right and orange facing down).
This is where the video ends...
Here is where I go to Lar Petrus' original website to learn up the rest of the steps completely, vis, Step 4b to Step 7 :
http://lar5.com/
Step 4b:
Insert the last corner + edge on the right bottom.
There are 3 cases:
Case 1: Orange corner facing back, different edge color facing up.
Same as Fridrich F2L - twist corner to meet edge then immediate insert into bottom.
Case 2: Orange Facing Up
Bring edge into front face. Bring corner into front face.
Align edge on left and twist corner Ui to stack on the edge.
Then insert as in Fridrich F2L
Case 3: Orance corner facing back right same edge color facing up.
Do Ui Ui to bring corner to top left with orange facing you.
Do Fi to bring corner to bottom left front. Do Ui to bring edge to align on left edge.
Do U to attach corner to edge on top left.
Then insert as in Fridrich F2L.
Step 5:
Steps 5, 6 and 7 are all LL.
Step 5 is to position all corners to correct corners. This is done by swapping two corners at a time. Twist the top Layer until you get as many corners in the correct corners. Then for the remaining two wrong corners do Niklas.
The Niklas algorithm:
Niklas: B Ui Fi U Bi Ui F U U
[ Niklas Barks Until Feisty Umbrella Begins Unfolding For Ursula Undress ]
You may need to do this twice if all four corners are wrong.
Step 6:
Here, all corners are correctly placed in their respective corners.
Now we need to twist the corners. The algorithm is called Sune:
There are 3 cases:
If you have 0 solved corner, put the left facing red corner on top left (called the target), then do Sune.
If you have 1 solved corner, put it on top left then do Sune.
If you have 2 solved corner, put the non-red left facing unsolved corner on top left.
You may need to do Sune two or three times to get all to top to become red.
Sune: R U Ri U R Ui Ui Ri
[ SunTzu Ran Up River, Useless Rogue Using UI Radio ]
Step 7:
This is the final step. By now the top layer is now all red facing up.
Leaving only 3 or 4 edges in wong edge.
If there is 1 correct edge, put it facing right and do Alan. You may need to do Alan, two or three times to get all the edges to permutate to the correnct edges.
With the correct edge facing right. Look down the cube fom the top. If the edges need to permutate anticlockwise, then do this Alan:
LL Ui B Fi LL BiF UiLL [ LUiBe FiLL BiF UiLL ]
However, if you notice that the edges need to permutate clockwise, then orient the correct edge facing left and do this Alan's Mirror:
RR U Bi F RR B Fi U RR [RRUBi FuRR BuFi URR ]
